Self Portrait in Darkness Painting

This self-portrait is reflective of the time in which it was made, but also of my love for the paintings of Caravaggio. After many upheavals and losses, and after some years in a personal wilderness of sorrow, reflection, experience and healing, this was one of the first paintings I had made for several years. It marked a determination to forge new ways of being, not merely new ways of working. It began as a life drawing using my graphite wash technique. That drawing was powerful enough in its own terms and I almost left it as it was, but I couldn't quite. I wanted to build something out from the darkness of the drawing and (if I could) bring it back toward the light. Suitably enough, a transformation occurs at night. When viewed in a dark room under the same lighting conditions in which it was painted (flourescent low energy light bulb not LED) the colours change and the appearance very closely resembles what I saw on those far away nights as I painted this. Under such conditions its real quality is very close to the surface.
