About The Artwork

I painted this self-portrait when my daughter was a few months old. Then my life changed abruptly, a new person came into it, followed by his things. Cribs, bottles, rattles and diapers. It was then that I conceived a series of still lifes of children from the new things around me. The self-portrait is one of the works in this series. It turned out to be symbolic. In the foreground a still life with flowers is what I cannot get out of my former life, then I am standing with the baby, not very happy and probably tired, and in the distance you can see a brightly lit room with a crib. After all, it is the light and joy that babies bring to our lives. We just need to tune in and see.

Hello, I am Oksana Slezina, a professional artist from Russia. I went to Art College in the small southern town of Krasnodar, where I was born. Then I moved to St. Petersburg, where I graduated from the Repin Academy of Arts. I regularly participate in exhibitions of the Union of Russian Artists, which I joined in 2015. I hold personal exhibitions. Some of my works can be found in foreign collections of Britain, Finland, Russia and others. Now I teach painting at the art college and work creatively in my studio. My favorite genre is still life. I paint what surrounds me in my daily life, including flowers, which are now sold in supermarkets as everyday things. The heroes of my paintings are flowers, both exquisite created by human intervention, and ordinary wild and garden ones. I think that together with modern household objects made of metal and plastic, fragile flowers look touching and remind us that we are part of nature. In some works I tell stories, giving them meaning through details and nuances. In others, I simply admire the charming beauty of nature enclosed in the rigid frames of urban space.
