About The Artwork

I had a dream about a red rose with drifting petals and leaves. It felt like love, but in a spiritual sense, so I had the sense of it coming out of the sky through sun and clouds. One day there was a wonderful, perfect sky ,so my husband took a photo of it for me to use as the backdrop for the painting. For me it is about the love that comes to us every day from our sense of the spiritual, whatever that may be for each person. It is painted in oil transparencies over an acrylic underpainting.

Kim sees her work as a mix of expressionism and impressionism, getting many of her ideas for paintings from dreams and meditations. She thinks of artwork as a form of visual healing and feels her paintings come from an intuitive process. Her oil/mixed media paintings are very symbolic and spiritually based. Kim practices a number of different meditation disciplines and feels that these practices form the foundation for much of her work on canvas. Her works on paper are watercolor/mixed media and lean towards social and environmental issues, but she also enjoys floral works and still life paintings. There is a lot of line work and detail that is added using pen and ink. She considers them paintings, but feels they also qualify as drawings. She enjoys using animals as stand ins for humans in her paintings, sometimes to make a political statement, sometimes in a humorous way. She was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1952 and has four grown children. Kim has lived in Minnesota and Arizona in the U.S. and has had work in galleries in both states. She started painting in her teen years, teaching herself the multi media processes she uses.
