Sex Romp Painting

This painting takes its primary reference point from the now almost infamous ‘Sex Romp’ scandal (as labeled by the National Papers) which happened in Christchurch (New Zealand) in 2015. The work is a sensitive work - not intended to be provocative - a response to what ‘is' and 'should be' in ‘public interest’ vs aimless sensationalism and titillation. There is at present no clear distinction and perhaps never will be. It also touches on the responsibility of the general public (who essentially broke the story before the press) in using new avenues of social media to share potentially sensitive material, for novelty, shaming or clickbait. Unfortunately for the couple in question, when the story broke, it had real life consequences. Both lost their jobs – the man his family and the lady I believed moved overseas in an effort to build a new life elsewhere. Strange times we live in.
