Betty Boop is regarded as one of the first and best-known sex symbols on the animated screen; she is a symbol of the Depression era and a reminder of the more carefree days of Jazz Age flappers. Her popularity largely drawn from adult audiences, as the cartoons, while seemingly surreal, contained many sexual and psychological elements. She has remained popular and embedded herself into popular culture as she is a paradoxical figure representing childish naivety or worldly-wise sexuality. A positive or negative role model? Her value is determined on our ideological approach. This same dichotomy is in the X, it is kiss symbol or an emphatic NO; the female portrait either protects or condemns.
