When I visit the gulf (minutes from my home), I often take photos while sitting in a beach chair. I capture the shot from a low angle rather than an eye-to-eye perspective because I find it more exciting and out of the ordinary. I use the photos as a beginning inspiration and most often change - well pretty much everything by the time the painting is complete. I changed the color and value of their legs to blend with the sand and shifted their bathing suit colors to harmonize with the water. I added some trees in the background and then created a horizontal line along the shore. The painting seems to dictate what it wants—an ultramarine blue square along the right edge of the picture. Fine, I tell myself, none of it has to make sense; it only has to feel right. Because life can be complicated and challenging, I use the sky diver's adage: "Look where you want to land" as my guide. It is why I focus and often refocus on the pleasure and beauty of life. This positive essence is what I hope to share. The cradled wood panel is custom made and coated with GAC (a wood sealant), followed with two coats of gesso. It is wired on the back and ready to hang.

My artistic career began behind a camera. I first hand-tinted photographs and then began to transfer film onto art paper and apply watercolors and pastels. These unique processes provided me with the opportunity to exhibit and teach in galleries, museums, and colleges throughout the world. After decades of teaching and experimenting with multiple mediums, I now mostly use oil paints because of their rich, organic, and translucent character. My work has been collected throughout the United States and Europe, including The John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art and The J. Paul Getty Foundation. Born and raised in southern California, I now reside and work in Sarasota, Florida. Since I've lived near the water my entire life, it's influenced my choices of color and texture. I find inspiration in the beauty of nature and the human figure, particularly when positioned in a state of joy, grace, or connection. When I paint, I usually began with an idea, a pattern of light and dark values, and a few colors, all of which can completely transform into something entirely different by the time the painting is finished. I like to let the color and light flow across figures and shapes, showing the connection between all that surrounds them and the sameness in all that exists. I hope you find joy and inspiration in my art.
