About The Artwork

I worked for a while in this refurbished building in Battersea, south London. The building was nicer outside than inside. There was a story that the old gates to the courtyard were featured in the early TV series Steptoe and Son. I never found out if this was true. The sale of this painting gave me a unique pleasure. The building happened to house one of the best framing companies in London, Stewart Heslop. They framed the painting for me. On the day I collected the framed picture, as I was walking across the courtyard with the picture under my arm, a man who worked in the building stopped me and asked to look at the artwork. He'd never bought a painting in his life. He bought it on the spot, there and then. The picture now hangs, I believe, in his villa on one of the Greek islands. What delighted me particularly was not just the speed of sale, but also the transformative power of art. One minute, we’ve a person with no interest in the subject and the next minute, they're a collector.

I paint industrial architecture, townscapes, landscapes, portraits and still life. Many pictures are based on London buildings, some of which - most of which come to think of it - have since been demolished, though not as a direct result of depiction. My interest in industrial architecture stems from the fact that I used to paint outdoors, in front of the scene itself. One of the few places you could do this without being disturbed was on derelict industrial wasteland - brown field sites as they're now called. If you paint in public places passers-by constantly interrupt. They look over your shoulder at what you're doing and say things like: 'My Nigel draws....'
