About The Artwork

I re-experience the memories, emotions and dreams of childhood from an adult perspective. The subconscious daughters of the disturbed adults that I portrayed in my earlier work, regress through childhood with all its fear, ambivalence, uncertainty, joy, excitement and desperate longing for order. "In her paintings Dionysian sensuality, chaos and madness vie with Apollonian logic, order and beauty and ultimately find peaceful resolution in the more recent paintings of this series. The Dionysian backgrounds of most of the paintings are various shades and textures of red, a color that quickens the breath and raises the blood pressure. The Apollonian images of the children are small and gemlike, subtly refracting the early emotional experiences of the artist. Any analysis of this work must be based on one’s own emotional responses to it and therefore idiosyncratic."

Born to an English mother and a French father, Claire Petit lives and works mainly in East of France when she doesn’t set up her art studio overseas. The vibrant red colors of Claire Petit's backgrounds remind us that in all circumstances the heart pulsates. In her work, duality breathes deeply, and from one life to the next, powerful feminine energy dominates: moving, introspective, multiple, often wrapped in a gentle violence. Claire is a self-taught painter who lives and works in the east of France. Since 1989 she has been traveling and working between France and the United States.  She had her first solo show in 1999 in New York City.  In 2004 her work was represented and exhibited at the Grant Gallery in Soho. In 2005 she left for Mexico, where she maintained a studio for three months in Oaxaca. From 2005 to 2010, her work was represented and exhibited by the Opera Gallery in New York City and Miami. During those years she regularly painted large format in New York. Since 2010 her work has been exhibited in Paris, Brussels, Luxembourg, Metz.. The book « The twin inside », printed in 2021, reunites 30 years of painting. Contact us to order a copy.
