Sophie de GARAM is an artist whose deep commitment to Buddhist theory and yoga practice has suffused her artistic expression and her way to perceive the world around her , giving rise to a body of work that blends action of painting with a meditative sense of contemplation and focus. Sophie’s intention is to cultivate through her artistic expression a generous, peaceful and clear mind to share with others her way of seeing the world and to grow according to her convictions . She travels the world and has lived in several countries most of her life away from her native country, France . She now shares her time between Sri Lanka and the south of France . Due to her extensive travels and the resulting sense of isolation in some remote countries, she was often confronted to a lack of painting materials and was forced to manufacture her mediums, paints, varnish etc…. Often rediscovering old traditional cooking her own recipes from previous centuries in Europe. S. uses raw materials, such as pure pigments ,encaustic, gum varnish, skin glue, Casein, oil , acryliques etc…. and would use barks of trees( see Tapas), parchments, multiples textiles, recycles wood tea boxes … The source of inspiration feeding her work ,varies depending on the culture she is exposed to at the time and is often an alibi to work on a limited series, away from her main track of work . These side roads became new ventures contributing to her artistic maturity. This way of exploring various fields of creation has always been a source of wealth to enhance her final objectif: Yoga and painting as ways of freeing the breath , liberating this vital energy animating the whole body. S. plays with the manifest and non manifest in her abstract line of work. Lines are travelling through the canvas in fluid overlapping mouvements. Lines appear and disappear under the surface, thicks or thins ,creating vibrants energy and a sense of hierarchy. Colors dialog with each other ,organic, vibrant and natural, transmitting the light of the living in a cosmic danse away from any reality we know. Nothing being tangent, permanent, what we see is the manifestation of vital energy moving through time and space in perpetual transformation.
