View in a Room ArtworkView in a Room Background
A young woman faces the viewer with her eyes closed in a classical contrapposto pose, clothed in a floral dress. Huge winged insects hover in the chiaroscuro gloom above, some with anthropomorphic faces, as if they are about to pounce on the victim from all angles. However, the insects’ enormous Manga-like eyes are staring blankly at the viewer, rather than the female. Like Fuseli’s The Nightmare, the painting
simultaneously offers the image of a dreaming women and the content of her nightmare. The viewer is invited to watch the woman dreaming, while participants in the dream or nightmare watch us.
