This is a reproduction of "Sitting Bull" by Harley Brown. Chief Sitting Bull was a Lakota holy man and fierce warrior that led the confederated Sioux, Cheyenne, and Lakota tribes in their struggle for survival on the Great Plains of North America. In the 1870’s the resistance movement against United States government policies was realized through a series of battles deemed the “Great Sioux Wars”, which would culminate in the infamous “Battle of the Little Bighorn” in 1876. Prior to the battle, Sitting Bull envisioned soldiers “thick as grasshoppers” falling headfirst into the Lakota camp, supposedly foreshadowing a great victory for Sitting Ball and his men. In an extraordinary turn of events, the native tribes decimated the 7th Calvary under Lt. Col. George Custer Armstrong, seemingly validating Sitting Bull’s prophetic vison. Years later, the Indian Agency Police attempted to arrest Sitting Bull, fearing he would join the growing Ghost Dance movement aimed at restoring the Sioux way of life. Sitting Bull was shot through the head on the Standing Rock Indian Reservation on December 15th, 1890. He wished to be remembered as a warrior, not a soldier, who sacrificed himself for the good of others, and was always the last man to surrender his rife. “If we must die, we die defending our rights” -Chief Sitting Bull

I am a Rangeland student and a visual artist living in San Angelo, Texas. I began my formal art education in high school, where I attended a private school with a 4-year art program on an artist scholarship. I specialize in oil paintings, but also enjoy pencil drawings and photography. Recently, I have been further discovering and honing my own painting style. I am influenced largely by post-impressionist and American realist frontier movements. I most enjoy paintings which depict the natural world in the Western US. Though I grew up outside Baltimore, Maryland I was fascinated with the Western US and the outdoors from a young age. I have experienced working and living on ranches in Wyoming, Montana, Idaho, and Texas. I hope my artwork can help share my experiences of this life with others.
