About The Artwork

The use of red thread on traditional beads resonate with the entanglements of alien cultures on Shona culture and it's conservation. The punctuations in this work converse on effects of colonialism in Zimbabwe. The cultural and racial genocide that transpired during colonial times has manifested in identity crisis creating a wedge between tradition and contemporary culture. It is incumbent upon all peoples of Africa in their diverse communities to love and preserve their culture and heritage and engage in conversations that pave way to the repatriation of all artefacts and heritage from the west. Such actions will primarily respond to social issues such as trauma, reconciliation and human development. Such notions should be proactive rather than reactive to promote accountability for past transgressions and past injustices , heal traumas and ultimately reduce the likelihood of such injustices to occur in the future.

Peter Musami is a mixed media visual artist practicing in Harare, Zimbabwe, from late 2000s. With influences derived from nature, contemporary affairs, societal culture and music, he has developed as a painter and sculptor whose work is not necessarily a quest for new art-forms, but rather a pursuit of discovering and demonstrating different dimensions to the already established art genres of mixed-media assemblage and abstract paintings. With a signature concept of vibrant oil colours and intricate shades of bold lines on canvasses, Musami’s abstract expressionist paintings depict a story of his life experiences and contemporary culture in an attractive and subtlety exotic way. Peter Musami attended the National Gallery of Zimbabwe School of Visual Arts and Design, from 2012 to 2013, and graduated at the top of his class, receiving the best student award in 2012 and the outstanding student award in 2013. During this time, he further polished his touch in assemblage and painting through exposure to critics and tutelage, as well as through cross-pollination of ideas and techniques from other established art genres, albeit, maintaining his originality and unique appeal. Musami’s work has been exhibited over the years in various solo and group exhibitions in Harare, Johannesburg and Cape Town, receiving acclaim from local media and many critical observers.
