ABOUT THE ARTWORK
This painting represents aquatic bodies entangled/ensnared in ghost nets—deadly, plastic bi-products of industrial fishing. The painting was made with many layers of glazing that hold light and mimic the luminosity of water. Intricate line work represents the nets, contrasting with deeper areas of light and dark, creating a tension between surface and depth. So too is the colorful beauty at odds with the bleak reality. And yet, the abstracted bodies are not stagnant, but instead are alive, freeing themselves from entanglement, and hopefully moving into a future that is not haunted by ghost nets.
