After returning from 2 years in Japan i made the "sore kara" series. The title is lifted from a Natsume Soseki novel of the same name which translates as "And Then", meaning what's next, what is the next phase. The influence of Japanese aesthetic is fully evident in this next phase of painting which was a complete break away from my earlier realistic work. The pieces are meditative and contemplative in nature for the viewer, drawing immediate visual attention yet allowing the mind rest there. The sore kara works were done by applying layers of gouache, silver and gold leaf on a variety of papers with the addition of acrylic medium. In between layers are scrubbed and partially removed, sometimes to the degree of breaking though the paper which is patched with more paper. This piece was done on heavy weight water color paper which my dog Jezzabelle had chewed off and eaten a triangular patch on the lower left. I repaired it in the spirit of kintsugi with silver and gold leaf which has enhanced it's beauty and depth. It is framed in a shadow box frame revealing the deckle edge. The paper dimensions are 30" x 22" and the frame measures 36½" x 28¼".

Working in art for me is process of opening and receptivity and at the same time a path of discovery of the unknown. There is a Japanese word Ma (間) which can be roughly translated as "gap", "space", "pause" . It is best described as a consciousness of place, not in the sense of an enclosed three-dimensional entity, but rather the simultaneous awareness of form and non-form. My work aims to express a place extending beyond the veil of tangible form, seeking the space between the physical and the non-physical. Like the emptiness at the bottom of the breath, it is a place of pause, a place of transition...
