His soul left his body on a cold Winter night and suddenly I realized how much of his life was still here in the people he knew, the stories he told and the life he lived. Color was the first thing that came into my mind, then patterns from the middle east. My mind was suddenly taken captive by an overwhelming sense to create. First, I wrote about disappointments, lost love, regret, powerful bonds, change, strangers, the fragility of life and so on. I wanted to mend what was broken and put back together what was and what could have been while still living what actually happened exactly the way I have. The way we did. I love brokenness and fragments of things. The rough edges remind me of how our control is limited and the outcome not usually what we had planned. The rough edges also a look internally, an examination of sorts. I collected a variety of papers and began tearing them into pieces. Grieving. Then very methodically, began to put the broken and torn pieces back together on the canvas. Pondering souls. What are they, what do they look like, where are they, are they physical or just a mist? The thoughts were overwhelming, yet peaceful and poured out so freely onto the canvas in layer after layer. Soul Mend-by Amy Elizabeth
