This painting was started in the spring of 2019 in Kauai and completed in North Carolina in the fall. It developed over a seven month period. Your concentration span or your attention span is the length of time you are able to concentrate on something or be interested in it. Art is my passion there are no time limits on creativity. It started out as an experimentation in techniques and then I completed it with free form brush strokes. Inspired by Joan Mitchel. Bio: Cheryl Johnson is a painter who explores the connection between realism and abstraction, balancing bold gestural art with sensitive expression. Resonating with Abstract Expressionists her non-objective and figurative early works transitioned into abstract representational themes. Her work is inspired by world travels as well as the landscape and cultures of her homes in North Carolina, Hawaii and her Idaho birthplace as well as her Finnish heritage. Cheryl’s transcendent eye propels her to explore the emotions of the place. As a strong environmental awareness advocate, Cheryl’s canvases are often inspired by nature and resonate with a deftly modulated palette of translucent and opaque colors. Light hues bleed into darks with a sense of expressive, fluid movement and reflect the harmony and tenacity of the natural world. Cheryl’s studios are in Charlotte, NC, and Hanalei, Kauai, HI.

Cheryl Johnson Cheryl Johnson is an American abstract artist whose work has appeared in galleries throughout the US. Her works are held in numerous private collections in the US, Europe, and Canada. She maintains a studio in Kauai, HI and divides her time between there and Charlotte, NC. A highly collectible artist. With a long and varied career as an instructional designer and graphic artist. Johnson worked for many years as an instructional designer and graphic designer and was ensconced in a life of technology and marketing. In 2010, she gave up a regular pay cheque at IBM to pursue her love of painting full-time. Cheryl Johnson describes painting as "a way of sharing my internal dialog in an external way. My commitment is to create dynamic yet sensitive, lyrically beautiful, works of art. My work resonates with a passion for color, line and light created to share an expression of overlapping time, memory and reality. My intention is to create work that is truthful and real, that has depth and is compelling from a distance and up close. I have come to believe that gravitas in art relates most specifically to how well the artist can transform an emotional idea into its visual equivalent. ”
