About The Artwork

This painting links together several experiences, influenced by the visual culture and personal life. The main impulse was a photo of a cowboy outfit from the 70s tailored for musical and film icons. I merged this public figure with a Demon (Spirit in the tree) that hounted my dreams in my early age,and appearing sometimes in the reality during my daydreaming. The absence of face refers to “facies nigra” of the Melancholy, and to saturnine entities that incarnate the tedious work in building history of mankind, so tragic and precious in the same time. It also has something of experience of dreams, where we capture moments, atmospheres, details that can draw our attention and make the faces and hands operate out of our sight. I’m still not sure whether the Spirit of Petrol is in the cowboy persona, or in the dark shadows moving behind him.

Born on 18 february 1976 in Rijeka, Croatia. Lives and works in Bruxelles. http://www.antonhorvatovic.com "My paintings are physical, involved, and constructed with recurring motifs and themes that move between my personal experience and the more universally symbolic - yet these works are not the product of any coolly executed plan - the success of the paintings lies entirely in their resolution through the act of painting. They are nocturnal - internal in every sense. Familiar identities are discovered, suggested - a youth, a cowboy - then sublimated into idiosyncratic narratives that remain open to interpretation - open largely through the raw intentionally 'unfinished' handling of paint that allows the imagery to 'move'.
