‘Spotted Hyena’ is painted with oils and gold leaf on canvas. It forms part of a series of paintings called ‘In the Balance’ which focused on the magnificence of some endangered animals superbly painted in Alexander’s hyper-realistic style. The hyenas, painted in detail in oils, are finishing off the remains of a carcass. The large male is displaying his strong jaws and vicious, wild nature, while two are seen resting while the young one explores. The background is gilded with gold leaf which has been tarnished to represent the dry bush veld of Africa. The beauty of gilding is that when the artwork is hung on a wall it reflects light and as the light changes throughout the day so does the artwork. The inspiration to paint the Spotted Hyena was to give hope for its survival. To bring it before the viewer and create awareness about the plight of this fragile subject matter. The spotted hyena has been, and still is, widely shot, poisoned, trapped, and snared, even inside some protected areas. They are also killed for use of their body parts as food or medicine. Habitat loss and degradation and overgrazing by domestic stock reduce the habitat available to populations of wildlife that are suitable prey for the spotted hyena.

I work mostly in oils in the style of the traditional realist, but I also enjoy combining the art of gilding and texturing in my paintings. I prefer to paint recognizable objects or elements that can be observed in nature and I aim always to capture express subjects and themes about our world and the human condition, especially those things that cause us great joy or great sorrow.
