St Marks Cathedral, Venice Painting

I enjoyed developing a wider range of mark making and a looser drawing style in city and urban landscapes as a member of the London Urban Sketchers group. Venice is a magical city, which I have visited several times, twice on my birthday. I always feel as if I am stepping back in time to the 16th century walking down the narrow alleys, and crossing town by water buses. I wanted to give a sense of the day to day bustle and activity in St Mark’s Square against the magnificent backdrop of ornately decorated architecture. This oil painting uses a darker ébauche for St Marks, and then builds up dry brushstrokes in brown and pastel shades for the external architecture to give a sense of the sunlight outside in the square, to contrast with the dark cool interior.
