A close friend said to me, “You can’t have the light without the dark.” I appreciated that reminder and I think my latest release, “Stellar,” embodies that sentiment perfectly. We all have light and dark within us. The trick is knowing how to balance the two. From my fall/winter 2024 collection, "...

“At its core, my art explores connection…our connection to nature, our connection to each other, our connection to ourselves, and our connection to the universe, spirit, or source. Connection is vast, intertwined, sometimes circular, sometimes disjointed. I often find connection on a subconscious level. I’ll create a painting and suddenly, I begin seeing elements of that painting everywhere I go, especially in nature. This has been happening more and more often, as my spirituality and connection to the process of my art have grown. Mother Nature paints the earth…I strive to interpret her paintings through emotional connection within my art. When I paint, I don’t paint the memory of what I’ve seen with my eyes, but rather, what I’ve felt with my soul. I try to capture the emotion on the canvas and the more I flow with a feeling, the more authentic my work becomes. My whole life has been an education in art. From the earliest age I can remember, visits to galleries, museums and artist friends’ houses were a regular part of my life. My mother was an accomplished water-colorist, my father, an avid art collector. Probably thanks to my home in beautiful Southern California, I have always been inspired by nature, specifically, the way the colors of the sea, mountains, and sky change based on the time of day, the seasons, the weather, and the place. I’m as intrigued by the endless combinations of color, texture, and movement I can create within my paintings, as I am with nature itself. Each of my paintings is multi-layered, with immense depth, but I also enjoy allowing some of the canvas to shine through. It’s a bit of a yin-yang philosophy, in that I recognize that everything and anything is possible upon a blank canvas, and the canvas invites me to bring forth those possibilities. I welcome and encourage my viewers to use their imagination to forge their own interpretation of my work. Where, I may have been inspired by clouds over the ocean, the viewer may see the Northern Lights or fog lifting off a misty lake. This relationship between the art and the viewer is just one of the many things that has drawn me to explore connection in my work. Each painting will reveal itself differently to each viewer, and the one constant I hope to share is that, often fleeting, feeling of connection, serenity, and contemplation, with an element of surprise. Even when using bold, vibrant colors, there is always an air of contemplation and serenity to my work.
