About The Artwork

Stonehenge has been on my “Bucket List” to visit as long as I can remember. Unfortunately, age and health will probably keep me from ever getting to see it in person. Recently, I contacted the photographer Andre Pattenden that has taken numerous beautiful photos of Stonehenge. I asked for permission to use one of his Stonehenge images as inspiration for a Stonehenge painting. To my delight Andre was most gracious not only giving me permission, but offering to send me high resolution photos. I was particularly impressed with his location, angle and his sunrise timing for the photography. In the painting I added the sky, clouds and the tall grass. My vision is to show Stonehenge as it might have looked to a local farmer or even a Neolithic migrant in the year 1328AD, not like the freshly mowed and highly protected national park it is today. Stonehenge is near Wiltshire, England. Archaeologists believe it was constructed from 3000 BC to 2000 BC. I hope my painting has done justice to this prehistoric monument.

Welcome to the visual world of Garry McMichael, painter and photographer. I think of myself as the documentarian of the mundane, whether it’s a rural school bus on a country road, an urban skyline, forgotten objects, or the activities of people doing ordinary things. To draw attention to my subjects I attempt to capture them during those fleeting moments when the atmospheric conditions and the ever-changing light come together in a flash of visual inspiration. It is at those moments that I attempt to turn everyday situations and objects into unforgettable imagery, be it in the form of a photograph or a painting. For over three decades I have explored Middle America, especially the Ozarks, capturing its beauty, people and objects with the camera, charcoals, pencil, pastels and paint. Whether you are inspired by the ebb and flow of the Mississippi River, a quiet walk through the rugged Ozark mountains, or watching a summer thunderstorm roll across Kansas I hope you will appreciate the art of Garry McMichael. Enjoy.
