About The Artwork

My approach with portraits is slightly alternative. It is not uncommon to see a side profile, but when deliberately composing a portrait with half of the front profile suddenly people become perturbed. This is deliberate. It somehow draws the eye in closer and people look closer, after a while the brain fills in the missing pieces and adjusts. The reason is that we never truly see the whole person, however hard we may look, we are only seeing what is presented to us.

I’m now in a place where I want to use my experiences as a doctor to influence my art; invoking thought to instigate change. I finally allowed myself the freedom to dive deep within myself, purge and draw out the pain, frustration, anger, joy and experiences of myself and every patient I have ever seen. Using predominantly oil with occasional resin and other mixed media, People Bleed is a contemporary collection bordering modern surrealism. The egg is frequently featured throughout the collection as a symbol of fertility, new life, fragility and loss: a powerful and raw juxtaposition to organic figurative work set often against a solid black background. The collection hopes to be a provocative and raw discussion on lesser-discussed truths of gender inequalities in health and society and what it is to live. Life is a symbiosis of hope and fear yet we instinctively run from the latter. When we acknowledge the lows with the highs, recognise life’s inherent struggles…we come to a place of acceptance; there lies the hope. If we accept that people bleed, and that that’s ok, would we find liberation and the journey along the way a little easier?
