About The Artwork

The Horizon Series of Encaustic works is a contemplation of the intriguing and soothing effect of gazing into the distance. In this series I have chosen to express visually that feeling of wonderment you get whilst gazing out at the ocean horizon. I am intrigued by how the colours and texture of the ocean are influenced by the colours and light in the sky. The ever elusive horizon fascinates, whether it be land or sea. Encaustic lends itself beautifully to images of water because the natural element of beeswax reflects the natural texture and translucency of water.

In her Sydney studio, Tricia creates atmospheric ocean horizons using beeswax, damar resin and dry pigments. She concentrates on how the light reflects on the water through different times of the day and weather. Her horizons give a sense of inner calmness and serenity and encourages the viewer to contemplate what is beyond. Tricia creates the illusion of distance in her paintings using light and dark. She uses texture to create the idea of waves and water, and light on the horizon to distinguish between times of day. Tricia says “Encaustic lends itself beautifully to images of water because the natural element of beeswax reflects the natural texture and translucency of water, also the unpredictability of how the wax responds each time I burn in the colour, reflects the unpredictability of the ocean and skies”. Over the past year Tricia has had numerous Solo and group shows around Sydney and participates in The Other Art Fair.
