Street of Dreams Painting

"I first met Toby in line for coffee at the Halal Guys truck on 53rd and Sixth. He was maybe 75 years old with longish white hair and a few days worth of stubble. He was wearing an old Yale baseball hat with a lot of mileage on it, and his Hawaiian shirt and olive drab army pants were clean but not new. He carried a well-traveled leather guitar case with a rope handle, and on his back was a folding chair strapped on like a backpack with an easel tied onto the chair with the same rope as the guitar case. Toby's face was weathered by the years and he was a bit sunburned except for where he had been wearing sunglasses yesterday. I introduced myself as a writer and told him I'd buy him a coffee and a bagel with a double schmear in exchange for ten minutes of his time. He smiled and told me he was on his way to his usual spot in the park where he spends most days painting, but for a free breakfast he was game to talk to me for a bit. If I had known then who Toby really was and what he had accomplished, I'm not sure I would have had the nerve, but I knew his was a story that deserved to be told..." We're all hoping to find our own private Street of Dreams. Some people are looking for riches and fame. Some for love and happiness. Some for freedom. Some for wisdom and enlightenment. This piece of art is dedicated to everyone who kept searching, everyone who wouldn't quit, everyone who endured the hardships it often takes to find your personal Street of Dreams. I began my "outsider artist" journey painting on the backs of obsolete Habitat for Humanity signs. When I had gone through all could find I turned to other hand lettered, ad hoc plywood signs like the kind one might find advertising yard sales or in concert venue parking lots. I flip them over and use the open wood panel to create art, including Street of Dreams. My entire series of 2 foot x 2 foot verso homemade sign artwork are all on clean plywood and would look great hanging in your home or office.
