About The Artwork

Study 14 with ferns from lava caves This series marks a crucial moment in Samia's life; as she learned more about the place she loves and holds so dearly, she also encountered some harsh realities about climate change and the destruction of our diverse ecosystems. Forests cover about two percent of the land on our planet and are home to more than half of the world's diverse species. Due to humans, these ecological niches are shrinking rapidly, causing many species to go extinct each day. She wanted to capture her love for forests in her abstract art to give them a voice. This is also when she chose to live as a vegan. Samira imagines herself in a dark world, which she has portrayed through layers of architectural forms opening up towards portals of a positive future. She wants viewers to experience the beauty she sees in plants; it is almost as though she is talking about them through her art. Each painting begins with a short abstract watercolour composition inspired by landscapes, which is then recreated on wood panels in thin layers of acrylic paint using brushes, water, spray cloth and other tools. Once the abstract layers are done, she then paints carefully chosen plants that she has captured in photographs over her many travels.

I'm an abstract painter and illustrator based out of Vancouver, Canada. My art is very inspired by my architecture background and love for tropical bio diversity. Through my art I like to bring out the importance of protecting tropical habitats that are diminishing everyday due to human activity.
