The provenance of this work is odd. I first painted it back in the mid-1970s. The old oil tank itself stood in front of my home near the garage. For some extraordinary reason, I mounted the hardboard panel on a sheet of half-inch ply-board. Why? You tell me. It was so heavy I could barely lift it. I then decided the picture wasn’t working, so I cast it aside, literally. For thirty years or more it lay in the back of a disused stable, enjoying a circle of friends exclusive to the district; mice, rats, weevils and various nibbling things unknown to science. Then one day I saw it again and decided to re-paint it. Amazingly the acrylic paint was undamaged - tough stuff acrylic paints. To remove the ply-board I had to employ a flatbed sander, a fearsome device that took us back to the original hardboard. And that’s what we have today. NB: Though described on this site as 'acrylic on wood', this work is actually painted in acrylic on a gessoed panel. The panel is made of hardboard, known in the US as Masonite.

United Kingdom
I paint industrial architecture, townscapes, landscapes, portraits and still life. Many pictures are based on London buildings, some of which - most of which come to think of it - have since been demolished, though not as a direct result of depiction. My interest in industrial architecture stems from the fact that I used to paint outdoors, in front of the scene itself. One of the few places you could do this without being disturbed was on derelict industrial wasteland - brown field sites as they're now called. If you paint in public places passers-by constantly interrupt. They look over your shoulder at what you're doing and say things like: 'My Nigel draws....'
