ABOUT THE ARTWORK

The term 'abstract' when applied to art means that the painting does not refer to anything outside itself, ie., it is not a depiction of anything in the visible, material world. However, It has been suggested that the large black shape with the vividly coloured highlights spanning vertically in the center of this painting relates to a human 'presence' (maybe the artist), as he passes through the complexities of life swirling around him. The paint is mixed with marble dust to give it a texture and is applied very quickly. I was looking for a spontaneity, and an honesty in the mark making. I tried not to overwork it, to keep it fresh and alive. The shadows are applied with an airbrush, and give the marks a substance, like they're real objects suspended in time and space. This painting is built to last, I used the highest quality paint, on double-primed 15 ounce cotton canvas stretched on treated pine. The varnish is high quality, oil-based and acid-free. My friend Louise was inspired to make a video. To watch it, please go to: https://vimeo.com/143603235

I was born and educated in Dublin, Ireland. After travelling and exhibiting my work throughout Europe, Africa, and America, I moved to Australia at the age of 34, and I have lived here ever since. “It takes a lot of energy out of me to take a painting from the initial idea to the finished piece. It’s the closest I’ll ever come to childbirth. I go through the full range of emotion with each piece - struggle, denial, elation, disappointment, self doubt etc,.…. and all of that is concentrated into the length of time it takes to create something new and original, something that wasn’t there before. Sometimes, if I feel low on energy, I remember all the power it took to produce a successful painting, and that feeds me back when I need it.”
