About The Artwork

This painting was inspired by Versailles and the era of Louis XIV. I aim to explore human nature in the context of history and create parallels between past and present. When I paint, I almost always listen to music, but lately the composer of "Sun King" - Luli helps me with his baroque harmony to transport myself out of reality. Just as the dancing monarch and his court retinue turn their backs on the daily problems of Paris and embark on the first open air performance of "Sound Versailles". There in “The Pleasures of the Enchanted Island” they fit into Ariosto's fantasy world. The perfection and sophistication of Versailles are in stark contrast to court life turned into a theater of intrigue and vanity. Illuminated by festive fireworks, Louis XIV's palace is accompanied by the frivolous sounds of splashing fountains. A wonderful backdrop for the heady farce. A person mentally entering this age of extremes feels the rhythm of absolutism wrapped in propaganda and self-centeredness. The Hall of Mirrors, a silent witness of monarchical self-love, continues today to reflect the purely human longing for self-perpetuation pouring into the element of smiling selfies. The impulses of narcissism in the hushed court scene intensify with the approach of old age, where sadness finds solace in the idealized characters of Greek mythology and the casual games of smiling angels. They witness the last breath of the king, identified with the god Apollo, and his remorse for the completely senseless wars and sacrifices. The end of the absolute monarchy comes violently, without any forgiveness or mercy. History constantly tells us about extremes in human evolution, which sooner or later lead to collapse and tragedies.

freelance artist, e-mail: larisailieva7@gmail.com Larisa Ilieva lives and works in Paris, France and Sofia, Bulgaria. « I like to travel in the history of art, to inspire and enrich my artistic research. Using the same language composed by previous artists, I want to develop it and release my creation against the clichés established. The mixture of images already existing in art with contemporary sensibility is the basis on which I try to build my own territory in art. Realizing a game of different aesthetic vibrations, my conception opens to new overlays and bridges between real and abstract, decorative and picturesque. I prefer details and fragments that I make with oriental precision. At the beginning of my work my compositions emerge from the chaos of untreated pure colors, which then give birth to a harmony of new nuances and forms that are organized in unity. The black line is a very important thing in my works, because it has the function of reinforcing the intensity of the painting, which begins to shine like on the stained glass window. When I paint, I always fall into a kind of contemplation of my world of fairy creatures and sacraments. The themes of love, harmony, beauty, eternity remain close to my nature. I prefer to work with acrylic because it is very well combined with most techniques such as collage, oil, watercolor, ink, pastel. I like working with these techniques quite varied, because they are complementary and affect my sensitivity. At the moment, I am happy to use the combination of acrylic and Indian ink. This allows me to obtain in my works a different structure of the surface. Some areas seem hyperactive, others vibrate according to the light, while others overflow. »
