TAKING A BREAK Painting

The artist drew four hawkers popularly known in our local dialect as Kayayo with different postures; some sitting on their head pan and sleeping while the other is sleeping on two head pans, eleven parked Lorries also known as “Bone shaker’’ and some buildings. The work which is tilled TAKING A BREAK, talks of how the hawkers and drivers take a break from their days work by resting or sleeping and parking their cars especially when business is down. The buildings in the painting suggest the scene is in the city. The artist painted the work flat on the canvas but with the effect of light source, tonal gradation and colour variations on the figures; the viewer gets the feeling of the painting being three dimensional. The technique used in the painting is “Edges interlacing” which was developed from the hard edge technique. In this technique the colours interlace at the edges forming different interesting patterns in the work. The artist choice of colours makes the painting look gay and gives it a sweet sensation making the work enjoyable to watch. Most of the colors are used in their raw state.
