The cutout of the image of a suitcase showing part of its vertical face and the handle, and its shadow on a wall, suspends the realistic tendency of this painting, not only because it is a close-up detail, but also because of its title. “Take me with you” evokes the desire to go somewhere, to leave where you are. The painting that is part of the series “Obsolete”, which deals with an object that fell into disuse after the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic. The greens and browns printed in the treatment given to the texture of the fabric can evoke other skins than the canvas of a suitcase and, with a little imagination, we could see the bark of trees from woods and forests in a distant country. It is in this way that the author declares her choice for the hue of much of this work. “The representation of a country where I can't be right now ended up being chosen for the color green. Almost a symbol of the world's desire: the Amazon rainforest. An icon of Brazil, here becomes a possibility of meaning for the affective memory present in this image.” Still in relation to affective issues, the presence in his ears of her mother's voice that used words like gores, folds that were dying as they became very thin... rocked the moment of painting “Take me with you”. The suitcase is there, asking to leave, to return to a place of desire.

Odette Boudet is a visual artist from Rio de Janeiro. In 2018 she moved to Porto, Portugal. Master in Plastic Arts from the Faculty of Fine Arts of the University of Porto (2022) and Graduated in cinema from Federal Fluminense University (1988), she has been dedicated to painting since 2011. The artist-researcher has presented her production in the cultural scene of the north of Portugal and in Brazil. The research in painting begins with the theme of movement, displacement and affective memory, through the metaphor of a suitcase. The theme expands to the relationships between the space of painting and the cinema screen, where she finds arguments to address current issues such as immigration and violence. Thought and gesture are crossed by a camera.
