Tessy's Sunflowers Painting

Brighton England, COVID lockdown My daughter Tess and her husband Michael asked me to paint some sunflowers. Yikes. Another Van Gogh attempt? No I said. When I was 6 and 7 (1956/7), there were, on Saturdays, cartoons on our 1949 TV tube. One old black and white cartoon was that of the daily battle for survival between the Sunshine Men and the Shadow Men. Every evening the sunshine characters went into hiding, and the shadow men ruled the earth. Sometimes though, the sunshine men were caught around the corner of a building while the shadows grew. Once the 90 degree angle was lost the sunshine men disappeared. A car crash for the imagination of a small boy in the 1950’s. But always, when the dawn arrived, the sunshine men arose – like Jason’s dragon teeth – and marched joyously to embrace the morning light! This painting tells that story: Sunflowers breathing Sunshine Men marching Into the light…. Triumph
