About The Artwork

A celebration of growing your own food and getting your hands into the earth: this painting was developed from sketches and observations made at my local city allottments in Bristol (Ashley Vale Allottments). The style is inspired by medieval miniature paintings which I love for their jewel like colours, and clever narrative devices. Persian miniatures gave me the idea for the tree which guides you along a circuitous path through the image. I love how these beautiful paintings tell many details from a story in one image, and you'll find many details in this painting too: birds, a sleeping dog, a curious cat, a hiding fox, and fragments of various human interactions with the earth, wildlife and fellow human beings... The measurements given for this image are for the painting itself, but it has a little border of empty space around it as seen in the image here, because the edges of the painting are soft and broken by protruding trees and other details.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I like to paint the world I observe around me; illustrating little remembered moments from everyday life and some of the unexpected flashes of beauty which touch me. Much of my work is inspired by the glory of nature, and some of it is more narrative based. I live in Britain, in the city of Bristol. I recently completed a masters in 'Authorial Illustration' at Falmouth University in Cornwall, with Distinction. In 1999 I graduated with a first class BA Hons degree in Fine Art and English Lit. from Exeter University, and since then I've worked as an artist, an art teacher, a gardener, and a youth and community worker. I'm passionate about colour, and love exploring the translucent, vibrant, unpredictable qualities of watercolour. I'm interested in the inner psychic journey as much as the outer world.
