About The Artwork

My work is diverse in figuration. In that at times I make portrait like pieces. They can be from humans I know or from annonmous images that I then make my own. This is the case with this peice. I am very passionate about music and style from various genres. Music and art has been my faith throughout 2020 in particular, but life in general. I liked the image as I knew it would lend itself to my portrait style. I wanted to create a portrait that captured the beauty and importance of music to our souls. I liked playing with the presumptions of the image. It's gender is unclear. That beat and opera are mentioned in the title. Music of all genres have such importance to our minds. Musical beat is directly relating to our heartbeats. Melody our emotion. The color palette uses a bright joyous colour of yellow against a calm and cityfied lilac tinged grey. I always paint the oil on a brightly coloured acrylic ground. Human faces in my works, (unless commisioned otherwise) always have only one eye slightly open, or eyes obscured completely. This is because eyes distract a viewer from other elements in a piece. I also want obscured eyes or one eye slightly open as a representation of the mysteries of being human.

Canadian-born Jennifer Mills moved to London aged 3 where she still resides and works. She has spent her life pursuing many creative passions. At 17 she pursued full time studies in dance, but returned to her first love of painting, securing a place at Central St. Martins School of Art where she trained under London Group Artist Mike Thorpe. Jennifer often uses film, music and particular images that resonate with her whilst she is painting. Her work is evocative and passionate and is constantly evolving. Painting humans using figurative expressionism and/or her style of portraiture. The paint/colour is sculpted on the surface. She is interested in the presence they evoke in an unspecified space. How they represent deep sensibilities and the human state. Her figures grow out of a dialogue with the paint. The illustrative turns into sensation using autobiographical influences.
