• The Boston Marathon • Painting

• "The Boston Marathon" is an abstract made to symbolize heroism, where I painted an imaginary group of British boys who became folk heroes in Africa after they avoided the deadly Ebola virus while playing basketball in their schoolyard. • Dressed in yellow garbs to protect themselves from the virus infection, the young boys participated in the April 15, 2013 117th Boston Marathon, and got world fame for their bravery. • Little did they know that when they were close to the finish line, a series of bombs went off that caused chaos and confusion, sending countless participants and spectators to run for cover. • In the actual incident, 3 people were killed, and 264 suffered all sorts of body injuries that sent trucks and hospitals into panic. The young perpetrator who detonated 2 home-made bombs was caught, and later sentenced to death. The bombing was terror-motivated. It made the Boston Marathon even more popular, but not in a positive way. • Nevertheless, the 2014 and 2015 Boston marathons attracted more runners from around the world to show solidarity, support, more interest in the sport, and naturally bravery. • The brutal cold temperature in the 2015 race did not discourage participation. The 2016 marathon was to be held on April 17, St. Patriots Day, which is a civic holiday in America to commemorate its independence from British rule on April 19, 1775, after a lot of ground fighting occurred in Lexington and Concord near Boston that made Paul Revere a folk, if not a national, hero. • In the 2015 Boston Marathon where about 30,000 runners participated, Rebekah Gregory ran with a prosthetic leg in only about 3 miles close to the finish line. Her prosthetic leg replaced the one she lost in the 2013 bombing incident. • When I showed the abstract to my daughter Beverly, a fine arts practitioner, and a semi-fanatic athletic cyclist in New York, she said that "Boston Marathon" looked like an image of former broadway star Carmen Miranda wearing her outlandish fruit-festooned headgear, and kids' favorite Willy Wonka in a group doing a line dance, as if they are going to fall in a vat of melted cheese. • • Do you see it the same way?
