The desire to paint honeycomb presented a challenge for me….How to use it in conjunction with the female form? I decided to use the honeycomb to form her body. As the bees seal up each hive cell with wax her skin begins to grow over it, essentially making her comprised of honeycomb. She is at one with nature and clearly the bees trust her explicitly as a safe place to nest. She sits up high on a branch in a gum tree where the gum flowers provide bountiful pollen for the busy bees. Also attracted to the flowers are a couple of Major Mitchell Cockatoos. Whilst one nibbles on a flower head, the other investigates the hand being offered. This aspect of the painting is inspired by Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel painting of ‘The Creation of Adam’. I wanted her to be a giver of life and this ball of light coming from her fingertip represents a life-force. This challenges the belief that God is a man.

Whilst painting this one I was transported back to my teenage years on our family property in Warrandyte. I used to enjoy sitting quietly amongst the nature and watching the insects, birds and wildlife go about their day un-phased by my presence. The background of this painting is based upon this property.

I am on holidays from 4 December 2018 - 15 January 2019. Any orders placed within this time will be sent upon my return. Have a safe and happy festive season! I’m a Melbourne based artist who loves to paint birds, animals, flowers and the female form. Most of my paintings are quirky and slightly surreal because I believe art should make us smile and feel good. I grew up in the bush of North Warrandyte in Victoria and am very grateful to have been influenced by this art aware community. It was the perfect place to nurture my passion for art, wildlife and the natural bush, which has had a massive impact upon what inspires my art today. Having drawn and painted since I was a small child, my subjects then included insects, budgies and horses; I admit that not much has changed! The myriad of creatures and critters living in the bush at the doorstep of my childhood home provided my curious mind with an endless supply of fascination and inspiration. With a style that is colourful, bold, slightly surreal and definitely quirky, my paintings reflect my mood and thinking. I frequently include an element of humour in my work by mixing things up a bit to make you look a few times. But I can also be dark, romantic and mysterious when painting my personal beliefs and theories. Since achieving 3rd place in the 2018 Art Lovers Prize Peoples' Choice Award my work has gone from strength to strength and is now available from The Block Shop as seen on Channel 9's The Block. I accept commissions, so do get in touch if you would like your very own original Retz painting. Enjoy looking at my artwork and I hope that something here tickles your fancy!
