About The Artwork
This piece is inspired by a world famous nursery rhyme, first recorded by James Orchard Halliwell in 1842. It goes like this: There was a crooked man, and he went a crooked mile, He found a crooked sixpence against a crooked stile; He bought a crooked cat, which caught a crooked mouse, And they all liv'd together in a little crooked house. There are many theories on what inspired the rhyme, but one of the most popular theories is that is was drawn from an old merchant village--Lavenham; inspired by the town's multi-colored houses, leaning in at odd and irregular angles.
