About The Artwork

“The Dionysian” is inspired by Friedrich Nietzsche’s first book, The Birth of Tragedy. In this book, Nietzsche explores two fundamental opposing tendencies in ancient Greek art: the Dionysian (music and lyric poetry, which embrace the pain of primordial chaos) and the Apollonian (plastic/representational art, which redeems primordial chaos through beauty). Starting with an abstract composition, I slowly worked into the human forms (eyes, hands) in various levels of abstraction. This process allowed me to push the plastic arts into the Dionysian, embracing chaos while still including idealized human forms.

Shipping & Returns

Delivery Time:Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

My goal is to create work that speaks across genres and traditions. My training in painting was in classical realism, but I work mostly in abstraction and surrealism. Regardless of genre, I balance representation with emotional communication. To me, the best paintings move their viewers without sacrificing technical proficiency, no matter how abstract or representational. You can find more of my work at www.slreichman.com.
