About The Artwork

Artist: Kristy Chettle Subject: Wintry Sky at Dusk Work: Original Oil Painting Using only Hands and Rags Size: 60”x 48”x 1.25’’, 152x122x3 cm, Sides: Painted as a Continuation of the Motif Frame: Unframed, Gallery Wrapped, Ready to Hang Chettle is a California native who lives and creates on the Monterey Peninsula. Inspired greatly by the coast and the natural beauty of the area, this painting is her reflection of a cold winter sky over the Pacific Ocean, a subject she truly enjoys painting. By dramatically combining complimentary colors, textures, depth and light, Chettle’s work in abstract oils inspires imagination in the viewer allowing them to see something different each time they experience her work. Her technique is quite unique, using only her hands and an occasional scraper to create a layering effect that adds depth and richness to her work. Chettle’s interest in art started when she was young being surrounded by the beauty of the California coast. After earning a degree in Art and Design at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, she studied in a small art school in Italy where she found her love for both oil paint and abstract art. Her current works are painted on reclaimed fence boards or recycled canvases and are created in her downtown studio on California’s Central Coast. The subjects of her attention range from figures to flowers to raw abstracts, but are always full of raw texture, color and intensity. Chettle's commendable skill and talent make her paintings sought after, and have been represented in galleries in Carmel-by-the-Sea and Pacific Grove, and can be found in numerous private collections in California. Investing in her work will bring a lifetime of pleasure to the most discriminating collectors of fine art. All works are copyrighted, and all rights are reserved by the artist. Thank You!

As a California native, Kristy Chettle’s (b. 1968, Los Angeles, CA) paintings explore themes of nature, transformation and self empowerment. Using only her hands and an occasional pallet knife, she paints in multiple layers, sometimes scraping off paint with her fingers only to later reapply a new color, resulting in deep texture and raw motion. Occasionally she writes her thoughts and emotions into the canvas or uses recycled paper or old screens to catch the next layer of paint enhancing the depth and visual interest of each piece. Working primarily with complimentary colors, her paintings are lively and raw with color vibrating throughout from layers deep within the work. Kristy is influenced and driven by her strong desire to protect both humankind and nature. She believes her work reflects the rebirth of both, hoping to spread inspiration and creativity to others. Her upbeat enthusiasm comes across in her work where she becomes intimate with her paint and canvas. By using her hands, she can literally feel the paint as she spreads it, giving her a spiritual connection with her work. Using large tubes of paint gives her the freedom to squeeze heavy amounts into her hands or right onto her canvas—moving the paint in dramatic strokes with her fingers, hands and arms, blending it and scraping it off again.
