Painting, Oil on Wood
Size: 17 W x 10.7 H x 0.1 D in
The Farther Oil, acrylic, recycled paint scraps, molding paste, & graphite on 3D panel These 3D paintings present the objective of pursuit, utilizing a distinct visual vocabulary to create an unattainable space: architectural references such as staircases, the color blue, and recycled art materials. Drawing upon architecture’s symbolic connotations, abstracted staircases direct the viewer skywards. Disjoined and spatially incongruous, these staircases would be almost impossible to climb. Rebecca Solnit wrote, blue is “the color of longing for the distances you never arrive in,” a place “where you are not and where you can never go.” This series utilizes the color blue to reinforce the never-ending nature of ambition. Just as the blue-space ceases to be blue upon arrival, to perpetually pursue is to immediately replace one goal with another upon its accomplishment.
