ABOUT THE ARTWORK

'The Feeling of Air, II' was made using light fast acrylic ink on gesso on marine ply. I mix the gesso from scratch and build it up in layers, sanding between each layer to create a smooth, porcelain-like surface. Once this is prepared, I use the inks, together with brushes, sandpaper, wire wool and wood carving tools, to push and pull the surface to create the painting. The journey of each painting starts with walking and running, observational drawings and 'fast' photography. I aim to capture the root of an experience, rather than the specific place, and often rely on body memory and intuition when painting in the studio. The paintings are a type of conversation between the materials and me. I am influenced by changes of light, land and weather in the world around me. I hope that viewers will feel nourished and uplifted by this painting. I imagine I can hear skylarks singing when I look at it.

SHIPPING AND RETURNS
Delivery Time:

Typically 5-7 business days for domestic shipments, 10-14 business days for international shipments.

I am inspired by light, land, sky, and weather. The paintings are amalgamations of journeys taken on foot by running and walking. They describe and communicate physical, emotional and visual experiences of landscape. I typically emphasise the sky and remove signs of human habitation. By doing this I hope to offer you space to breathe and be, to be immersed or uplifted, to connect with your own memories of landscape. The paintings are made using a traditional gesso ground on birch or poplar. I prepare the gesso surface over a number of days. When I am ready to make a painting, I create texture by painting with the gesso and carving into the surface with wire wool, sandpaper and wood carving tools. Next I work with high quality light fast acrylic inks and push the pigment into the surfaces I have created. Alex has exhibited widely in the UK, working regularly with The Other Art Fair presented by Saatchi Art. She has work in private collections in France, Germany, Norway, the USA, Japan and the UK.
