INSPIRATION: Playing in flower gardens inspired this work. As a child I was not allowed to pick the flowers. I was told that only the flower god could pick them. I have depicted this benevolent god making a bouquet of unlimited pickings in a Ming dynasty vase to decorate a table at the seashore. In the background young ladies and boys are sunbathing and riding sea creatures that are pulled by butterflies. At the top of the canvas nymphs with butterfly wings sow seeds and water the flowers. Just as I made my way through evening gardens with lightning bugs in an aerated jar, this flowery world is lit by a single lightning bug in a lantern. I hope VIEWERS will respond to The Flower God by recalling the heavenly scent, beauty, structure and color of flowers. I hope they "get" that the whimsical activities at the beach illustrate my artistic thesis of harmony between nature and humanity. In a broader sense, I hope it encourages viewers to stop and smell the roses! TECHNICAL MATTERS I use acrylic paint because it allows me to paint wet on wet by mixing in a retarder. Because of its short drying time, I can build up many layers quickly. Layering is important to get the finish I desire (depth and luminosity of color) I paint on stretched linen because I like the ease of application of paint that linen affords. The work framed in a white floating gallery frame and is ready to hang.

As a painter, I am an explorer, uncovering, recording and rearranging the beauty of the natural world, as well as the beauty of human beings. I select and distill the very essence of my subject, harmony between nature and humanity, sometimes combining the two. This symbiosis makes the finished work even more beautiful than either of its constituents alone. When you first visit my fantasy world, you will notice a lot of extraordinary things going on in my paintings. For instance, I might substitute a bird for a hat, or a butterfly for a bowtie. These unusual substitutions function as symbols and provide subtle clues and playful suggestions about my work. The shapes of birds and hats, or butterflies and bowties, are so similar that viewers never even question the replacements. I pick the substitutes because they fit graphically and visually. But it is more than that. We as humans fit with nature. We fit together so well, in fact, that I am able to paint a natural object–a butterfly–in place of the bowtie–and viewers can see this as truth. My world will refresh you with its vibrant colors, textures, and interchangeable shapes as you immerse yourself in the integration of nature and humanity. You will be at peace with yourself and at one with nature. You will experience nature in a totally new way and see beauty in places where you never before thought to look.
