About The Artwork

Sebastian Inlet seemed so far away as we seldom traveled by car outside our little area of Eau Gallie. The current there was swift and we often heard of boats being swept out to sea and having to be rescued. When my father joined us for a day's outing, the inlet was a place to stop for a cool drink on our way to Vero Beach. Once there, we would swim in the ocean where we could cling to pilings with ropes to rest before body surfing back to shore. This painting is part of my Inner Landscapes series. This artwork was featured in Abstraction: Retrospective Memories, an exhibition at the Foosaner Art Museum in Melbourne, Florida from March 20 through June 19, 2021.

As a visual storyteller, Griffith creates images that invoke memories and feelings from the beauty she discovers in the world. Inspired by a lifelong fascination with abstract shapes, Griffith paints to capture the essence of a place to convey her thoughts and feelings. Her mixed-media art is often reminiscent of an earlier era yet is also unmistakably contemporary, intending to create modern art filled with layers of history and texture. Her work then invites viewers to complete the story by interpreting it through their lens and experience. Griffith often uses acrylic paints, graphite, charcoal, and various collage materials while creating her work. Shen then uses these materials, her layering techniques, and her sense of design to create texture and depth for each piece. Thus, furthering the invitation for viewers to join her in this exploration of memory and history. For her, Griffith states, 'creating is a labor of love'.”
