About The Artwork

Alex Scarrow's remote lighthouse in a stormy sea is a Lovecraftian metaphor for the turbulent world today. The sea is the world of politics, the kraken that is emerging from it is the return of facism provoked by populist and nationalistic messaging. Closer in we can see a crewman presenting the discovery of a small squid to a colleague, which in turn, provokes the emergence of a long threatening tentacle. The glow of the lighthouse's oil lamp seems to suggest a demonic Cthulu-esque face, calling out into the darkness, perhaps summoning the creature. Alex Scarrow innovates by adding the crew as separate art miniatures that can be moved around the lighthouse, allowing the client to personalise his painting, to collaborate with the artist in finessing a different narrative.
