About The Artwork

This is one of a series of experimental mini works that were done during the same period, most of which started with drying the remaining black paint off of a foam roller in opposing vertical and horizontal directions (e.g., Simple Arithmetic and Page Out of a Diary). With this particular work, there was also experimentation with use of acrylic ink droppers and smearing using various silicone tip implements. What emerged from this mad experiment was a kind of demented representation of a dysfunctional or inharmonious yin and yang relationship between two complementary (or, more likely, opposing and uncooperative forces). The title alludes to the shaky relationship, with the two opposites being divided vertically down the center with what appears almost to be a thorn-encrusted wreath-like column. Numerous symmetries, quasi-symmetries, and inverse symmetries abound throughout the work, most obviously with the contrasted warm and cool colors of either side, but including the layout quasi-symmetry of horizontal lines on the left side and the absence of horizontal lines (and, rather, predominance of vertical lines) on the right side, as well as the layout inverse symmetry of the row of dots descending down in the top left corner of the left side versus the row of dots ascending up in the bottom right corner of the right side. Thematically, the work hints at an uneasy relationship or troubled partnership or disunion.
