About The Artwork

'The Red Twin' by Artist CMA Ryan is a superb oil paint portrait created in 2022. The artists expert use of an illuminating colour palette and subtle chiaroscuro effect creates a familiarity between the subject and viewer. The oil paint application is carefully considered to enhance the young boys cheerfulness and most likely, inner impish nature. The portrait has been painted in a looser style to really exaggerate the contrast between the intense red colouration and cooler white tones which bring the piece to its dramatic conclusion. The subject of this portrait is an unknown young boy, believed to be a twin; possibly from Central Europe and was taken from an antique black and white photograph (c.1930) owned by the artist. This cheeky young lad was painstakingly studied, drafted and successfully revived in marvellous oil colour for all to enjoy. This piece was painted on gesso board and cradled on the reverse by a wooden frame. It has been sealed and protected with high quality artist grade varnish and is ready to be framed for display. CMA Ryan selects faces from discarded photographs and challenges the ephemeral status of these objects by placing them within the historical tradition of portraiture. Intuitive studies in charcoal and graphite lead on to rendering in oil paint, in which vibrant, broken colours and contrasting textures are modified and inscribed. This layered process arrives at a unified and naturalistic representation, with a vibrancy that comes from within. The artist draws on the rich tradition of portraiture, with particular inspiration taken from the Flemish masters and the Expressionists of the early 20th century. British artist CMA Ryan maintains a full time studio practice, close to the countryside of rural England.
