About The Artwork

Acrylic on Board, mounted and ready to hang. This image was taken as a film still from an underwater model shoot, and Kerry was drawn to the reflections, the poise of the girl, and the beautiful way that she was captured in the light. Her dress and jewellery and the reflections above take the eye on a journey from her bodice to the flowers and then throughout the painting. The light highlighting the chest contrasted against the colourful watery background captures the softness of the water and this colourful light filled space. Use of contrasted colours such as pink and green guides the eye, whilst the figure remains quite abstracted, leaving the shapes to be put together by the viewer. Kerry has developed her style using contemporary art techniques such as expressionism and pop art. The resultant painting is a wonderful reflection of romantic poise and feminine allure. Aptly named after a line in Emily Dickinson's poem "The Lovers" where Dickinson refers to the exciting feelings of falling in love. This painting is painted using professional artist acrylics and mediums from Matisse, Golden, and Liquitex Professional Spray Paint. Gesso and Golden Self Levelling Medium has been painted onto the board prior to painting the image - the medium creates texture and an impression of movement to the surface of the painting. The painting is finished with a Satin Varnish. Professionally mounted board on an "inbuilt" frame, Kerry has then has painted the board and frame as one unit. The painting is fitted with a wire and two D rings and is ready to hang. Kerry recommends hanging it from two hooks on the wire, or directly to the wall on the D-rings.

Kerry was born in Wudinna, a remote and tiny dusty town in South Australia, in 1972. This was a time and culture where women weren't allowed in the local pub and were expected to quit work when they got married. She distinctly recalls seeing articles about Jackson Pollock and Andy Warhol as a teenager but thought the art world was a world where she couldn't belong - girls were supposed to marry farmers and have children. After a diversion into a "sensible career" and motherhood, Kerry went back to her passion and was conceptually trained through the South Australian School of Art in 2012, with a Bachelor of Visual Art, Specialisation Painting. During her studies, she turned to her love of stencil-making and action painting techniques with acrylic paint and created her own style. Kerry won the UniSA Medal for her outstanding academic and artistic results, and in 2013 her artwork was selected by top South Australian art-aficionado's, including the then Director of the Art Gallery of South Australia, Nick Mitzevich (now director of the National Gallery of Australia), to participate in The Helpmann Academy Graduate Exhibition - an incredible honour for any SA graduating tertiary art student. Today she works as an underwater photographer and painter from her home studio in Darwin, Northern Territory. She has participated in many group and solo shows. Her artwork is held in private collections in New Zealand, The United States, Switzerland, Germany, Hong Kong, and all-around Australia. She was selected as a Finalist in the 2021 Bluethumb Art Award, and her upcoming projects include a two-month residency in Germany, which will be followed by her first international solo show. She has also just been selected as a Finalist for The Percival Photographic Portrait Prize 2024. Her mission is to uplift women with her art – this is the engine that fires her entire practice.
