ABOUT THE ARTWORK
Working with the theme of prey and hunter the artist has drawn from her own experiences in the sea where she has had several close encounters with sharks. (She was a competitive boardsailor and has a great affinity with the ocean.) The painting speaks of the contrast of innocent (the small fish ) with those who would devour. The metaphor for the fine balance and precariousness of our existence filters through her work. We are unable to warn the fish of the inherent danger which circles ever closer. The artist became fascinated with sharks while doing research for an article surrounding the great white's disappearance from Cape Town seas. The painting then is also a cry for attention regarding ecological issues such as over-fishing, plastic pollution and man's interference with nature.
