This is a work inspired from drawings I made at the National Portrait Gallery combined my background in Chinese Painting and preoccupation with the Malaysian spirit world and ghost stories thereof. Like myself, it is a ‘mash’ of the East and West. I have distilled, restructured and machinated these to fit into a contemporary art dialectic In doing this, I am attempting to contribute to a zeitgeist of female figurative painters who are creating an exciting genre of women who are tackling the perception of the female form within the historically laden canon of Traditional Western Painting This work was exhibited in my inaugural solo show at Kensal Green Cemetery in January 2017. Nadine Talalla is a contemporary painter from Australia and Malaysia living in London who paints women from a woman’s perspective. She was educated in Malaysia, Australia, China and United Kingdom. She has completed a Foundation in Chinese Painting and Cultural Studies from Beijing Language & Cultural University, a Bachelor of Fine Art, Painting, at The Royal Institute of Technology (RMIT) in 2004 and a Masters of Arts Management at The University of Melbourne in 2006. In 2016, she completed the Turps Banana Studio Programme. She has been profiled in BBC News and Radio and featured in The World of Interiors, The Wall Street International Journal, The Evening Standard, The Week and numerous other International media. ‘Interested in female archetypes and tragedy, Talalla paints what she calls “ugly women” taken from different points in history and embedded in fantastic, dreamlike narratives. She paints strong female archetypes who are not idealized to a male standard of perfection’ Wall Street International Journal ‘The presence of her oil paintings overwhelm in their ability to share dramatic moments of engagement; in romance, pain, beauty, colour, experience and nostalgia …..Talalla brings life to the ‘dead’ and abject feelings of womankind’ Artlyst ‘Nadine Talalla paints larger-than-life women with tenacity and drama, their physical and emotional strain almost palpable on the surface, that they seem impossible to contain on canvas. When they are not involved in mystic, otherworldly rituals, they are enveloped in the cycles of life — love, ecstasy, shame, childbirth, loss — or they return our gaze in a knowing way that comes so naturally to women, who spend their life being looked at’ Liza Premiyak 2017, Journalist based in London, Managing Editor of Calvert Journal.
