Painting, Acrylic on Canvas
Size: 18 W x 52 H x 0.1 D in
This work was conceived as a process experiment, to explore the process of "engraving" free-form calligraphy / asemic writing into a thick base layer of medium body white paint, and then using this "secret" calligraphy later to form the base upon which to add numerous layers of glazes, each of which would further reveal the calligraphy beneath by depositing pigment into the grooves and alongside the edges of the textured carvings into the base layer. Over time, a composition revealed itself and became solidified with further work. Ultimately, the composition is intentionally somewhat vague, indistinct, and ambiguous to some degree, or at least as softly stated and ephemeral as the calligraphic secrets buried under all the layers of glaze. This composition suggests a source of flame, from which some mystical properties emanate in waves - the elixir... of what, it is not known. So as to suggest an unboundedness for the rising flames and sparks, the composition is deliberately kept open at the top and bottom while being "bounded" by golden ribbons that frame it on the left and right sides. The apparent crucible of flames appears to be "seated" in a twisted or knotted network of green ribbons, that snake along the diagonal cross-hatching that gives the work its subtly faceted appearance.
