About The Artwork

The shelf falls is one of a series of paintings depicting scenes from a hike I went on as a teenager in Ithaca NY. Throughout my life I've taken photos of the beautiful places I've been in the hopes of one day painting them. 18 years later inspiration struck and I was able to finally capture this image on canvas. From both my memory and my reference photo I was able to feel once again the sense of tranquility I felt while walking through this gorge and seeing so many beautiful places around each corner along the trail held another surprise. I took lots of pictures that day but this one struck me immediately because of the water flowing through the cold shadows and into the warm sunlight. The contrast was exspecially striking and it caught and held my attention. Luckily my memory of this place was also strong and I feel I was able to put that sense of amazement that I felt onto this canvas. I hope my painting speaks to you. Please enjoy

Matthew McDermott, b. 1981 NY, is an artist living and working in the San Francisco Bay Area. Mat struggles with mental illness and epilepsy on a day to day basis but has found his purpose in the creative arts in the form of painting, stained glass and custom woodworking. Prior to 2018 his work was available only through a commission basis and resides in private collections throughout the United States. In 2015 he was fortunate enough to gain a patron that funded the body of his work now available in his portfolio. "My artwork has become my only way to find myself again. Life is good when I'm painting and creating and I'm happy because I'm doing what I love. When things are bad I focus on the fact that my art is there waiting for me to get better and that it is something to hang on to when everything seems so horrible and normal life feels like a dream or a story that can't possibly be real."
